CHICAGO, Ill. – The Orange men’s soccer team lost to BIG EAST foe DePaul on Saturday, Oct. 1. Syracuse is now 4-4-2 on the season and 0-4-1 in conference play. The Blue Demons improved to 3-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the league.
DePaul grabbed the lead when Julian Chillé and DeGroot teamed up for a goal at 12:51. Chillé countered a Syracuse attack and found DeGroot all alone in front of Syracuse keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) DeGroot took two dribbles and fired a low liner to the left corner of the net to put the Blue Demons in front.
Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) recorded SU’s best scoring chance of the match midway through the second half when he flipped a shot in front of the DePaul goal, but Blue Demon keeper Brian Visser made the save.
Cavicchia finished with one save in 90 minutes of action, while Rowley and freshman Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) paced the Orange offense with two shots each.
Both teams finished with seven shot attempts in the match. The Blue Demons held the edge in corner kicks, 4-3.
Visser made three saves to earn the shutout for DePaul.
The Orange return home on Wednesday, Oct. 5 when it hosts nationally-ranked St. John’s at the SU Soccer Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
